Remember the SuperSonics?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t San Diego on the west coast?
ESPN announced today the latest list of teams the Big East is adding in a desperate attempt to remain in tact, and keep the all-mighty BCS Gods appeased. All this does, however, is further make a mockery of college football. Outside of Boise State, a genuinely successful football program and now conference alpha dog, the remaining teams are mediocre at best. Yes, Houston had a fantastic season, but that is the result of one talented, college quarterback. San Diego State, SMU and UCF are middling teams that are rarely ranked, let alone able to compete with the actual power conferences.
This move either assures the Big East’s loss of automatic qualification status or confirms their status, and my further disillusionment with the sport; I can’t decide. What I do know is that the move will cost the league more in the long run, both financially (e.g. more travel) and recruitment-wise (“come to the Big East and play against teams that used to have Marshall Faulk and Daunte Culpepper!”).
